The homepage is not designed first as a collection of sections. Romanisti begins by designing the arrival.

Chapter I — The Arrival

One Question

What should someone feel during their first sixty seconds?

Everything else is secondary.

Constitutional Principle

The threshold introduces the institution before it introduces its content.

Visitors should first understand where they have arrived, and only then begin reading.

The Threshold

At the entrance to Romanisti:

The Romanisti wordmark establishes the institution.
The inscription reads:

Rome.

AS Roma.

And those that love them both.

The Capitoline Wolf serves as the Guardian of the Threshold.

She appears not as branding, decoration, or mascot, but as Rome’s enduring steward. She welcomes visitors into the institution because she belongs first to Rome and only secondarily to every institution that draws from Rome’s inheritance.

Her presence is quiet, dignified, and architectural.

She is the monument of the piazza.

Constitutional Discovery

Romanisti does not begin with a headline.

It begins with an entrance.

Chapter II — Composition

One Question

What occupies the first screen?

Not what is included.

What is seen.

Above-the-Fold Composition

Only five elements deserve to exist above the fold:

Romanisti — the institution and highest level of hierarchy.
The Inscription — Rome. AS Roma. And those that love them both.
The Guardian — the Capitoline Wolf, present but never dominant.
One Invitation — Begin Reading.
Light — empty space as intentional architecture.

The first screen contains:

no featured article;
no latest-news grid;
no newsletter signup;
no social icons;
no editorial promotions;
no advertisements;
no statistics;
no About section;
no competing calls to action;
no clutter.

The first screen is not where Romanisti explains itself.

It is where Romanisti earns trust.

Constitutional Principles

The threshold precedes the piazza.
Nothing above the fold competes with the institution.
The first screen earns trust before offering choice.
The Capitoline Wolf serves as the Guardian of the Threshold.
Light is an architectural element.
Empty space is intentional composition.
The first scroll symbolizes entering the institution.

The above-the-fold experience is the threshold into the piazza, not the piazza itself. After the first scroll, the featured article, editorial pathways, and life of the publication may emerge.

Chapter III — Orientation

One Question

How does a visitor always know where they are?

Institution

The visitor always knows: I am in Romanisti.

The institution never disappears.

District

The visitor knows where within Romanisti they are. Every district possesses a distinct identity while remaining unmistakably Romanisti.

Street

The street is the individual article, essay, news story, or Codex work. Every page belongs to a district. Nothing exists in isolation.

Address

The address is the reader’s exact location: article title, edition, publication date, and reading progress.

Constitutional Principles

Orientation emerges from identity before it relies on navigation.
Every place possesses its own character while remaining unmistakably Romanisti.
The institution always precedes the district.
The district always precedes the street.
The street always precedes the address.
Visitors should intuitively know where they are before they consciously read where they are.

Breadcrumbs are a technical solution, not the architecture itself. Romanisti should require them only rarely.

Repository v2.1 Civic-Nomenclature Clarification

The hierarchy Institution → District → Street → Address is canonical.

Individual district names are not established by this chapter. The phrase “the threshold precedes the piazza” describes an architectural sequence and does not independently name a district.

Chapter IV — Rhythm

One Question

How fast should Romanisti feel?

The interface should be technically instantaneous.

The experience should be emotionally unhurried.

Four Rhythms

Arrival — orientation: Where am I?
Discovery — something captures attention naturally, never aggressively.
Reflection — white space, a quotation, a photograph, or another deliberate pause.
Continuation — the reader moves because curiosity has been sustained, not because urgency has been manufactured.

Prohibited Interruptions

no pop-ups;
no auto-playing media;
no flashing banners;
no mid-paragraph recommendation interruptions;
no unnecessary animation;
no manufactured urgency.

The institution protects concentration.

Constitutional Principles

Romanisti never competes with the reader’s attention.

It protects it.

Romanisti is a steward of attention: not merely of ideas, journalism, or Rome, but of the finite attention every reader entrusts to it.

Every interruption is a tax.

Every unnecessary click is a debt.

Every unnecessary animation is a distraction.

Every unnecessary decision is friction.

The institution removes burdens rather than creating them.

Chapter V — Memory

One Question

How does Romanisti remember?

An institution differs from a website through continuity. Romanisti should never feel reset. When the reader returns, the institution should feel as though it has quietly continued its life while they were away.

Four Forms of Memory

Editorial Memory

Stories are never isolated. Current work may quietly acknowledge previous reporting, earlier essays, or relevant Codex passages. Every publication belongs to a continuing conversation.

Institutional Memory

Edition notes, significant milestones, constitutional changes, and major editorials remain available to those who wish to understand how Romanisti has evolved.

Reader Memory

Romanisti may quietly remember where a reader left off—not to drive engagement metrics, but to remove friction. Continuity should be offered without celebration or intrusion.

Civic Memory

Anniversaries, historic matches, births, losses, and moments that shaped the city or club may surface naturally when appropriate. Today’s story remains part of a longer one.

Constitutional Principles

Stewardship without memory is impossible.
Romanisti should not merely store its past; its past should quietly inform its present.
Every publication becomes part of the institution’s permanent conversation.
Nothing is disposable.
Nothing is published merely to fill a day.
Every article enters the record.
Romanisti remembers with intention.
The institution accumulates meaning, not clutter or volume.

Chapter VI — Editorial Judgment

One Question

What deserves attention?

Chronology is not judgment.

Popularity is not judgment.

Virality is not judgment.

Romanisti should never behave like a feed. A feed asks the reader to decide. An institution makes the first decision on the reader’s behalf. That is not control. It is hospitality.

Editorial Hierarchy

I — The Editor’s Choice

One piece: the institution’s voice today.

Not necessarily the newest.

The most important.

II — The Conversation

Several related works provide context rather than random recommendation. Romanisti connects ideas rather than merely listing them.

III — Discovery

Only after orientation does the reader explore archives, districts, topics, and authors independently.

IV — The Archive

Nothing disappears. Older work becomes quieter rather than disposable.

Constitutional Principles

The homepage earns trust before it offers choice.
Romanisti exercises judgment before it offers abundance.
The institution publishes because something matters, not merely because something happened.
Romanisti is a steward of significance.
Readers should never feel abandoned inside an ocean of content.
The institution quietly says: Begin here.
If Romanisti elevates something to the front page, it should be prepared to defend that decision years later.
Publishing is stewardship, not production.

Architectural Foundation

The Interface Architecture is governed by six institutional behaviors:

Arrival — how the institution welcomes.
Composition — how it presents itself.
Orientation — how it guides.
Rhythm — how it respects attention.
Memory — how it endures.
Editorial Judgment — how it chooses.

These principles do not define software. Together they define the conduct of the institution.

The constitutional work is complete.

The next phase begins drawing: structural wireframes and architectural plans from which future pages, components, and interactions will inherit.
